Transferable Skills Workshop I (TSW I)
24-26th March 2021, remotely online.
The workshop will focus on presentation and communication skills, public engagement, writing for publications, open science and open access, all areas that are considered key competencies by the European Commission.
TSW I addresses ESRs from the POST-DIGITAL project and other sisters projects MEFISTA, REAL-NET and WON.

SPEAKERS
Prof. John Dudley
Prof. John Dudley has a long string of acronyms to his name, John Dudley PhD FOSA FEOS FIEEE FInstP FSPIE DSc h.c. Hon FRSNZ received B.Sc and PhD degrees from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 1987 and 1992 respectively, and is Professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, France.
He has made particular contributions in the fields of ultrafast optics, supercontinuum generation and the science of rogue waves, and has published over 500 contributions in journals & conference proceedings and delivered over 120 invited talks at major conferences. His research has been extensively cited (14700 times Web of Science; 23000 times Google Scholar) and his h-index is an impressive 59/63/71. He has been awarded numerous scientific prises for his work (Harold E. Edgerton Award of SPIE, R. W. Wood Prize of OSA) and been elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Aparangi.
Apart from his scientific accolades, John, a SPIE Senior Member, is known as a thought leader in his field as well as for his dedicated outreach and science-focused communication in the public sphere. As chair of its steering committee, he was instrumental in creating UNESCO’s International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies for 2015.
Gorkem Memisoglu – MSCA postdoctoral Fellow
Gorkem is an experimental Physicist and MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow in project MULTIPLY, currently on secondment at Aston University from Universidad del País Vasco. Gorkem received her PhD in 2015 for her work on hybrid UV-A photodetector preparation and characterization. Having worked in industry for 6 years Gorkem is the inventor or co-inventor of 58 patent applications in both Europe and the US in a wide range of areas, including photonics, optoelectronic devices and consumer electronics.
Rachel Won – International Editor Nature Photonics
Rachel joined Nature Photonics in June 2006 from Aston University’s Business Partnership Unit in Birmingham, UK where she worked as a Medici Fellow commercializing photonics research. She obtained her PhD in optical fibre sensing, microwave photonics and fibre nonlinearities as a member of Aston’s Photonics Research Group. Prior to that, Rachel worked for Philips Optical Storage in Singapore as an Optics Engineer. She holds a Master’s degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a Bachelor’s degree from the National University of Malaysia. Rachel is based in London.
Srikanth Sugavanam – Assistant Professor, SCEE
Srikanth Sugavanam is an Assistant Professor, SCEE. Before he was working as post-doctoral research scientist/EU Project Manager with the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT), Aston University. He completed his PhD in 2015 from the AIPT under Prof. Sergei Turitsyn, specializing in the area of real-time intensity and spectral measurements of fibre laser dynamics. He has also worked in the area of optical metamaterials, Raman fibre lasers, and random fibre lasers. His contributions have been featured in several international journals, including Nature Photonics and Nature Communications. Apart from actively pursuing research, Srikanth is fulfilling the role of Programme Manager for the Marie S.Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship programme, MULTIPLY, co-ordinated by Aston University.
Dr Jamie Gallagher
This training will be delivered by Dr Jamie Gallagher. Jamie is an award-winning engagement professional with ten years’ experience in the delivery and evaluation of quality engagement projects. Working across dozens of institutions and subject areas he has helped researchers improve the reach, profile and impact of research engagement in almost every academic discipline. Specialising in evaluation and impact Jamie provides consultancy services to charities and universities helping them to demonstrate their impact and understand their audiences and stakeholders.
